First Presbyterian Church of Franklin Receives The Lilly
Endowment National Clergy Renewal Program Grant
Congratulations to First Presbyterian Church of Franklin on the receipt of a grant of $30,000 to enable its pastor, Rev. Chris Joiner, to participate in the 2011 National Clergy Renewal Program funded by the Indianapolis-based Lilly Endowment Inc. It is one of 158 congregations across the country that will support their ministers in the program, which allows pastors to step back from their busy lives and renew their spirits for the benefit of their ongoing ministries.
First Presbyterian Church of Franklin is granting the sabbatical leave for Pastor Chris to experience personal renewal, reflect on the theology and practice of hospitality as a possible key for individual and congregational health, and develop a proposal for creating methods of hospitality throughout the congregation, particularly in welcoming guests and guiding them into deeper discipleship.
Chris will explore what it means for a suburban congregation in the southeastern United States to effectively engage the surrounding culture in ways that go beyond appeals to friendliness and/or surface changes to worship services. He will accomplish this by exploring themes from the work of Douglas John Hall and Diana Butler Bass, combining them with travel and research into best congregational practices. He will travel to Montreal, Quebec, Canada; Holy Cross Monastery in West Park, New York; Riverside Church in New York City; visit churches in Atlanta, Georgia; Charlotte, North Carolina; and Birmingham, Alabama; spend a month writing in Montreat, North Carolina and San Francisco, California; and enjoy times of Sabbath rest with his family.

Regional Gatherings for Church Development Regional Gatherings are a ministry of the Congregational Development Mission Unit of our presbytery. These gatherings are located in regional areas of our presbytery (east, south, and in Nashville). At each meeting a resource is presented, explained, and discussed. The dialogue between churches is also a resource that benefits those who participate. This is a wonderful opportunity for Ruling and Teaching Elders to give and receive encouragement. Click here for the next meeting in your area and a report on the last meetings. Contact Michael Davis, the Associate Executive Presbyter for Congregational Development.

A Pastoral Letter from the Interim Executive Presbyter

Dear Colleagues and Friends in the Presbytery of Middle Tennessee,

By now, you are aware that Amendment 10-A has passed the majority of presbyteries in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.).  For many, in our presbytery and elsewhere, this is joyful news, and for others it is not.  Our own Presbytery is divided nearly in half on this issue.  Trying to maintain unity during such times of division is challenging but I choose to believe that it is not impossible.

My prayer is that, here in the Presbytery of Middle Tennessee, we will find a way to truly be one in Christ and to continue to be a community of disciples that engages in worshipful work in order to further the missio dei (mission of God). I commend to you the churchwide letter from our denominational leaders, a FAQ document, and liturgical resources that may be helpful to our congregations. Meanwhile, please be in prayer for one another, especially for those in our midst who are wounded by this turn of events.  Know with assurance that I am praying for every one of you as leaders and members in our church.  May the Lord equip you with an extra measure of grace and wisdom in your ministry with God’s people.

Blessings,

Linda Badger Becker
